Holiday visits to upstate New York aren't complete without some Purity Egg Nog, italian food, thrifting, and frolicking in the snow. A wonderful way to wrap up 2012.

New York State of Mind

Visiting New York City is always a treat, especially around the holidays. This time around, we stayed in the lovely MySuites Hamilton Suite in the West Village, which quickly felt like a home away from home. We also stopped by the BluDot showroom where our SR Wall Pockets and SR Gingerbread Geodesic Dome Kits were part of the Core 77 Holiday Market.

Field Research: Quito Keepsakes

 

 

We had such an amazing time in Quito, Ecuador. We will miss our friends, the wonderful people, and our phones (yes, we lost both of them), but we'll have these lovely keepsakes and our memories until the next time we visit!

Field Research: ATU International in Quito, Ecuador

 

 

 

While we were in Quito, we had the opportunity to tour our friend's family business, ATU International. As one of the major furniture companies in South America, ATU designs and fabricates their entire line in Quito. It was great to see the manufacturing process at their facility. ATU also used to design and fabricate some awesome bicycles, which were great to see on site.

We finally had the chance to visit South America when our good friends were married in Quito, Ecuador. What an amazing city. The historic center of Quito is considered a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, and we can see why.

We are thrilled to share some images of our latest project, the New Belgium Ranger Station, which will be opening very soon in Snowmass, Colorado.  We designed the space and the furnishings for the slope-side bar/restaurant, and the talented folks at Reunion created an amazing identity and concept for the bar.  Keep an eye out for more images of the A-frame bar, the SR Ranger Stools (complete with cubbies for gear and an underside hook for helmets), and the SR Matchstick Tables designed specifically for the space!

Field Research: Climbing Mt. Whitney

While one half of SR was gem hunting, the other half (Ben) was climbing Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States. An amazing climb with amazing views. Check out the time lapse video that Ben made of the sun setting over the ridge leading to Mount Whitney.

Field Research: Gemorama 2012

California is full of amazing and weird wonders. One of them is an annual event out in Trona, CA (population: 18) called Gem-O-Rama, and it's as amazing as it sounds. It's a gem-ing event complete with field trips, mining excursions, pancake breakfasts, and a "Blow Hole" trip that involves the US Navy blowing up a muddy lake so people can scour for hanksite, halite, and other gems.  Half of SR (Makoto) road tripped it out there with the lovely Kate Miss and Laure Joliet this year, and we have a feeling it will be a bigger event next year!

Trail Registry One Year Later

In the many years we've lived in Los Angeles, we've never been to the Autry Center in Griffith Park.  On the Smithsonian Museum Day this year, we finally checked it out.  A real treat with lots of great work from the Southwest and well curated rotating exhibits. Highly recommend it!

Interbike 2012

We had the opportunity to go to the Interbike Convention this year in Las Vegas to see the latest and greatest in bicycles. It's great to see so many talented and creative bike manufacturers in the States.  We love the bikes from Co-Motion Cycles out of Oregon, Worksman Cycles from New York, and DeSalvo Custom Cycles from Oregon. So inspiring!
